Live Nation: Accelerating Event-Ticketing Innovation with APIs
Live Nation Entertainment is the global leader in event ticketing. The company’s best-known property is Ticketmaster.com, a massive ecommerce site with a database of over 119 million fans.
Challenges and opportunities
Live Nation has been working with APIs for years. Until recently, however, the company’s APIs were supported by a feeble and not-easily-scalable infrastructure. Merging with Ticketmaster in 2010 compounded the stress on Live Nation’s API infrastructure and highlighted the need to adopt a proven API solution to supports its growth.
“Suddenly we were managing the world’s fifth-largest ecommerce site,” says Adam Colson, senior product manager at Live Nation. “If you’re growing as aggressively as we are, you can’t manage your APIs on a homegrown platform. You need an industrial solution that can deliver the highest levels of security, performance, and developer support.”
Today, Live Nation offers access to APIs enabling a wide range of users -- including internal developers as well as external partners and clients -- to build everything from event calendars to ticketing applications for desktops, kiosks, mobile devices, and more.
Apigee is the engine behind Live Nation’s API platform. In addition to creating a more collaborative environment for internal and external users, Apigee technology helps Live Nation comply with industry standards for the protection of consumer data. “Apigee integrates beautifully with our various PCI solutions,” says Colson. “We’ve even integrated it with Splunk so that we can run in-depth reporting and analysis on all API activity across our environment.”
With its new API platform built on Apigee technology, Live Nation has reduced developer onboarding time from two weeks to two minutes -- a critical improvement at a time when the company is seeing 100 percent year-over-year growth in mobile app transaction volume.
“Our developers love how quickly and simply they can get up and started on the new platform,” says Colson. “And with this technology in place, we have the ability to expand the business without worrying if our infrastructure is incapable of growing with it.”
