SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Aug 30, 2011) - Today at Dreamforce, Apigee, the leading provider of API management products and services, launched the Apigee OAuth API to take the pain and complexity out of implementing OAuth (Open Authorization) across several APIs (application programming interfaces). Apigee OAuth API is available today in beta as part of Apigee's free API management service. Apigee's OAuth API is currently for developers building social apps using the Salesforce REST, Chatter, LinkedIn, and Twitter APIs, with support for more APIs to be added. Developers can start using Apigee OAuth API today at https://developers.apigee.com.
"We've done more OAuth implementations than any company on the planet," said Greg Brail, CTO of Apigee. "And while OAuth helps end-users keep their passwords secure, it is painful for the developers who build applications, especially when they use multiple Web services. That's why we've built the OAuth API -- a single API for using OAuth across several different APIs -- so that developers can build apps a lot faster."
Today's explosion in mobile apps, each connecting to several back-end services or APIs, is driving the rapid adoption of OAuth. OAuth is like a 'valet key' that enables consumers to try new apps using an existing account they already have (such as their Facebook or Google account), instead of needing to create a new account or password. However, while OAuth can make the authentication process for users of mobile and native apps much easier, using OAuth can be a complex and cumbersome process for developers.
The Apigee OAuth API lets developers quickly leverage multiple social and enterprise APIs. Developers can authenticate with the Twitter, LinkedIn, and Salesforce REST and Chatter APIs in one way then use native code libraries to build apps faster. Apps built with the Apigee OAuth API authenticate apps and users safely with less code and less development complexity. Initially available as a beta release for Salesforce Chatter, Force.com, Twitter and LinkedIn APIs, the Apigee OAuth API will soon support more APIs.
Apigee also announced at Dreamforce today two new Apigee API Consoles to help developers start building apps faster with Salesforce REST and Chatter APIs. With Apigee's interactive API Consoles, developers can explore, learn, and test APIs more easily, finding and solving problems quickly, and share their results with others. Developers can get started immediately learning, exploring and testing the Salesforce REST and Chatter APIs with Apigee Consoles at https://apigee.com/console/salesforce and https://apigee.com/console/chatter.
In addition to free API developer tools that make it easier for developers and providers to explore and use APIs, Apigee provides an enterprise API management platform. The Apigee API platform helps companies of all sizes open their data and services via APIs to fuel their mobile, multi-channel and innovation strategies. With Apigee, enterprises can reduce the complexity of providing APIs, drive developer adoption, analyze and understand API usage, and easily scale as customers' API channels grow.
