Nick Pudar, director of the developer ecosystem for General Motors, sat down with us at I ♥ APIs 2013 for a conversation about how the digital, connected world is affecting the automobile business. He discussed GM's journey through almost two decades of connectivity and the company's work to provide the developer ecosystem—the app framework, the tools, and APIs—to create innovative solutions for vehicles.
"We know that our customers want their connected lifestyle to work seamlessly. In the old days we used to draw our vehicle and the constellation of other things all around it. That's not the right way to think about it. It's the customer that's in the middle and we are part of the constellation of their connected world."
Pudar describes how APIs allow this automotive giant to extend the capabilities we've all grown to love (air bag notifications, locking and unlocking of doors, emergency responses, vehicle diagnostics, and navigation support) by mixing and mashing up with partners and other services, and by supporting an app framework in vehicles through which customers can download customized apps.
Thanks to Nick for an enlightening conversation. We're eager to see how this exciting world of connected and programmable vehicles unfolds.
