Tutorial: Push Notifications in 5 Simple Steps

In our previous post, we discussed the evolution of electronic communications that spanned email, text, and push notifications. Now, let’s see how push notifications work from a technical standpoint and uncover the five simple steps to creating them.


5 simple steps to delivering push notifications

  1. Register your app with a push provider.
  2. Register with Apigee.
  3. Create a notifier.
  4. Configure your app’s users and devices through Apigee’s API.
  5. Send push notifications.

1. Register your app with a push provider

To deliver a push notification, you’ll need to register with a couple of push service providers (like Apple APNs or Google GCM) that correspond to the devices that are registered with them. 

Service providers are the gateways through which push notifications are delivered to registered devices. Platform providers like Apple and Google control these services. This means they also ensure security and trust with the apps that use them. Registering with a service provider allows you to get a security certificate or trusted key to send with your push messages.

2. Register with Apigee

Next, you’ll register with Apigee to upload your certificate or key by creating a free Apigee account. This allows you to easily connect your app and device(s) with multiple push providers.

You'll also need:

  • An organization - a top-level container for your APIs and other resources.
  • An app - a container that controls access to your APIs.

3. Create a notifier

Then, create a notifier and connect it to your app by either using Apigee's UI or configuring it programmatically. 

A notifier is an app service entity that carries your push notification to a notification provider. Notifiers, like other Apigee entities such as users, groups, and devices, are collections of unique objects.

4. Configure your app’s users and devices through Apigee’s API

Push providers like Apple APNs and Google GCM route messages but to integrate with them directly you'd have to configure them separately. Apigee simplifies the differences between platforms to add more elegant routing. Apigee does this by allowing you to create relationships between devices (UUIDs) and app users. This allows you to send pushes to groups of app users on any device simultaneously.

5. Send push notifications!

After completing the steps above, you are ready to run your app and send push notifications.
