Apigee Cloud Deployment for High Availability

Apigee Product Team
Sep 25, 2014

On Sep 24th, our cloud hosting provider (Amazon Web Services) notified us that it will be rolling out an urgent and critical patch to hosts causing a maintenance reboot of EC2 instances over the next several days starting on September 26, 2014, at 2:00 UTC/GMT (September 25, 2014, at 7:00 PM PDT) and ending on September 30, 2014, at 23:59 UTC/GMT (September 30, 2014, at 4:59 PM PDT).

Apigee products—Apigee Edge and Apigee Insights—are currently hosted on the cloud with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Apigee has architected and deployed its product in such a way that it minimizes service disruptions and ensures that we provide the best possible availability and reliability for our cloud customers. Specifically:

  • Built-in redundancy at the routing and runtime layer, striped across multiple availability zones for all paid customers.
  • Built-in redundancy at the data tier, striped across multiple availability zones for all paid customers.
  • An additional layer of cross regional replication of data and redundant provision of the service with active failover for our DN customers.

Because the AWS action is going to be limited to at most one availability zone within any region at any time, our customers should not see any significant impact to production traffic.  We will continue to monitor and fix our systems as a priority during the entire event.

Because AWS is not able to guarantee sufficient available capacity on pre-patched hosts, we cannot actively migrate our servers to safe hosts proactively. However, whenever possible, we will migrate hosts in a planned way rather than risk an unplanned reboot. In some cases, where we feel that the reboots could result in short term capacity crunches, we will also provision additional capacity to mitigate.
