How an API-based Architecture Improves Healthcare in Chile
A few years back, the IT infrastructure of Chile’s health system needed an overhaul, and it needed it quickly.
The Chilean Health Ministry’s (MINSAL) previous attempt to efficiently and scalably integrate health records and create interconnectivity among thousands of medical facilities—some of them quite remote—used a centralized, SOA-based architecture.
This strategy turned out to be an expensive and inflexible way to try to achieve interoperability.
Soledad Munoz Lopez, MINSAL’s CIO, has led the charge to revamp the approach with an aggressive program to build a national API-based architecture.
Lopez recently visited Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., to explain how the move to an API-based architecture and the Apigee API platform is helping Chile modernize its health infrastructure, quickly and more securely.
“The Ministry of Health selected the Apigee platform, taking into consideration the need to accelerate data integration,” Lopez said. “We're very happy with the results that we have seen in terms of performance and with all of the product's certifications.”
The key accomplishment, however, is the ability to ensure secure access to patient information, regardless of whether it is needed in one of Chile’s 1,000 remote medical facilities or in one of its connected health centers.
“The main advantage is being able to ensure that information circulates in our system securely,” she added. “This is the main reason why the Ministry of Health chose the Apigee platform—to secure and accelerate the data integration processes needed today.”
