Sage and the Power of the Developer Portal

A key way to convince external developers—your channel partners—to build apps for customers that use your APIs is to build an outstanding developer experience.

It’s pretty hard to achieve this without a developer portal.

"Historically, we've offered APIs and web services, but we never really had that developer experience down,” said Joseph Smutz, director of product integration at Sage Payment Solutions.

The payments processing company uses API management to offer its services to external developers, who can add Sage's payment, check, gift, and loyalty services to their own products.

"The API management layer allows us to scale our products and services that we offer internally externally," he said.

Key to seeing those services get built into new customer experiences is the sophisticated developer portal Sage implemented, Smutz said.

So far, it’s made a big difference, significantly boosting developer registration and reducing the amount of time it takes for partners to begin using the company's APIs, he said.

The company went from a manual process—a “PDF world," as Smutz called it—to a “sandbox environment, where someone can just grab an API and be up and running in five minutes."

The before and after difference in agility  "is hard to even calculate," he said.
