A Toast to an Awesome Year

2018 was an AMAZING year for Google Cloud’s Apigee team. It was, in fact, another “best year ever.”

We’re deeply grateful to the companies who use Apigee to accelerate their businesses with APIs. Their success last year helped us win praise from Gartner, which named Apigee as a leader in the 2018 Magic Quadrant for Full Life Cycle API Management, and Forrester Research, which recognized Apigee as an API management solution leader in The Forrester Wave™: API Management Solutions, Q4 2018.

During 2018, the number of APIs that our customers ran on the Apigee platform climbed more than 160%, to nearly 36,000, and the traffic running through the Apigee cloud nearly doubled, to an average of 5.3 billion API calls per day at the end of last year.

To help our customers become even more successful, we introduced a bunch of new capabilities in 2018, including more than 41 new features and more than 2,200 enhancements and fixes over 6 public and private cloud releases. Highlights include:

  • Apigee API monitoring, a new feature that enables the quick and accurate identification of API issues based on insights into API performance—whether in a developer application, an API proxy, or a backend service
  • Hosted targets, which provide enterprises with a simple way to add more business logic to their APIs than previously possible
  • Apigee extensions, a feature that enables organizations to seamlessly access Google Cloud services like Cloud Firestore, Cloud Pub/Sub, Cloud Storage, and Spanner

In addition to the extensions to Google Cloud services, we made available a new extension to access Informatica’s integration-Platform-as-a-Service (iPaaS) offering. This extension, built in partnership with Informatica, enables API developers to use policies to discover and invoke business integration processes that are defined in Informatica’s Integration Cloud.

We also unveiled integrated Apigee API management with Istio, an independent service mesh that provides the fundamentals to successfully run a distributed microservices architecture. With this new capability, Istio users can expose services from an Istio mesh as APIs by adding API management capabilities via Istio’s native configuration mechanism.

It’s particularly gratifying to be able to deliver the scope, scalability, reliability, and security that our customers require for mission-critical operations.

We went live in eight new Google Cloud Platform regions in 2018 (including Belgium, London, Sydney, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, and three U.S. regions), and Apigee is now ISO 27001, ISO 27017, and ISO 27018 certified.

And during the recent Black Friday Cyber Monday (BFCM) period, the number of API calls for Apigee’s retail customers (excluding those who host the platform on-premises) grew 95% compared to this five-day span in 2017.

API traffic running through Apigee during BFCM reached a peak 108,000 transactions per second (TPS) on Friday, Nov. 23, as compared to a peak of 48,000 TPS last year.

We’re happy to report that the Apigee platform remained 99.999% available throughout the BFCM period.

With another banner year behind Apigee, we can’t wait to see what kind of success our customers achieve in 2019.
