Transavia: From Impossibility to Prototype with APIs

In its push to become Europe’s top digital airline, competing on price is old news to Transavia. Now, the key goal is delivering outstanding experiences to travelers and partners alike—and building the capabilities to do that with speed and agility.

We spoke with Vincent Thamm, Transavia's innovation manager, and Accenture project manager Jan Willem Hennink about how APIs are key to making this happen.

Hennink, who was brought in to Transavia to help build its API strategy and create its first APIs, and Thamm listed several examples of the agility and speed that resulted from partnering with Apigee:

  • project implementation time was reduced from 12 weeks to just a few hours
  • partner onboarding time was reduced from 12 weeks to 10 days (and, in one case, a developer building on Transavia APIs earned €30,000 in two weeks)
  • during a recent internal Transavia hackathon, a project considered too complex to build eight years ago became a working prototye in a matter of hours

“APIs help us with fast time to market, adapt to a rapidly changing environment, and help us to explore new business models,” Thamm said. “APIs are one of the key drivers for us to be become a digital airline.
