Equinix: Cloud Provisioning with APIs
Equinix Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX) connects more than 4,500 companies directly to their customers and partners inside the world's most networked data centers. Today, businesses leverage the Equinix interconnection platform in 32 strategic markets across the Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific.
Challenges & Opportunities
Equinix, the global interconnection and data center company, is a true innovator. Available in 19 business markets globally, Equinix’s Cloud Exchange enables seamless, on-demand, direct access to multiple clouds from multiple networks and to the top cloud service providers, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, SoftLayer, and others. As enterprises increasingly move to a hybrid cloud strategy of combining public and private clouds, this sort of interconnection hub becomes increasingly important.
In the past, services provided by Equinix partners were beholden to the physical provisioning of cross-connects, which were not automated, and thus slowed down service delivery. As a result, Equinix sought a solution to remove the barrier to provisioning in real-time and give application developers seamless, on-demand access to multiple clouds from multiple networks to build sophisticated hybrid cloud solutions.
Equinix needed an intelligent API management solution that would enable it to simplify the otherwise complex process of managing connections to multiple cloud services and networks. After weighing the build vs. buy decision and researching providers, the company decided to work with Apigee.
“We realized that it would take a long time to catch up to the sophisticated API management platform that Apigee built,” says Equinix CIO Brian Lillie. “Apigee’s solution is far and away the best API platform in the market.” Equinix delivers the Apigee Edge API platform as part of its Cloud Exchange to provide the company’s customers with high-performance cloud provisioning through APIs.
“The near-real-time connectivity in the Equinix Cloud Exchange is grounded in APIs, so we needed robust API management that can support heavy traffic loads,” Lillie says. “With its proven API management and strong analytics, Apigee stood out as a clear choice.”
To further empower developers, Equinix also launched the Equinix Cloud Exchange Software Developer’s Kit (SDK) and a private developer portal to enable application developers to innovate by building on their APIs. The company is also utilizing Apigee to digitize its internal APIs and mobilize its workforce by exposing its IT services through mobile apps.
As the result of its engagement with Apigee, Equinix can ensure seamless, high performance cloud connectivity across its global ecosystem and provide developers a strong foundation to accelerate their innovation in the cloud. The intelligent API platform also helps Equinix manage security, analytics, and the optimization of API usage. Using Apigee’s robust API technology also enabled the company to focus on its core strength while keeping up with the changing digital market.
“Equinix excels at network-rich, cloud-rich data centers. We know how to build them, we know how to fill them, and we know how to run them,” Lillie explains. “Picking solution providers like Apigee just makes us move much faster.”
