Accounting software vendor Sage jumps on the API bandwagon, partners with Apigee to provide API management via its Sage Payments Developer Portal
Apps are getting smarter at a ferocious pace; so why don't CEOs want to take advantage of these new technologies? I discuss API ecosystems and innovation with the CEO of Indix.
The words “application program interface” (API) may conjure up images of programmers rather than profits, but for a growing number of information service providers, APIs are practically a form of currency. APIs are Web service provider use to expose services so that other applications can use them. For example, a credit bureau may make credit checks available as a service via an API so that loan processing applications can tap into it. The credit bureau takes a few cents for each transaction. Mapquest Inc. has long used APIs to use to expose its mapping services to paying customers, who use them for everything from store locators to logistics management. But until recently the process was manually intensive and slow. Apigee Edge API management software from Apigee Corp. has changed all that.
Apigee has announced that the Microgateway capability in the Apigee Edge API management software is now supported by Pivotal Cloud Foundry, helping developers use Apigee’s API management software to share, monitor and secure APIs and microservices for applications developed with Pivotal’s cloud native platform. The release will help developers deal with the complexity of a microservices architecture and the management of microservices when dealing with large scale inter-microservices communication.
With the cloud becoming more pervasive by the day, we are currently living the end game of something Nicholas Carr predicted in his controversial — but prophetic — 2003 article “IT Doesn’t Matter.” More and more, companies are fulfilling their IT requirements by purchasing fee-based “web services” from third parties — similar to the way they currently buy electric power or telecommunications services.
Pivotal announced a key integration with Apigee and also launched a new channel program for system integrators and consultants. Apigee, an API management and predictive analytics solution provider, has teamed up with Pivotal to bring Apigee's Edge Microgateway API management capability to the Pivotal Cloud Foundry platform.
