Apigee Delivers API Management for Software-Defined Networking (SDN)

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Sept. 25, 2012 Apigee, the API company, today announced a version of the company's leading API platform designed for Software-Defined Networking (SDN) environments. Apigee now delivers the robust API management required to build, manage and scale applications for the programmable datacenter. Apigee's SDN solution comprises embeddable API management software for providers of SDN controllers and a standalone platform for network management, integration, and analytics. With Apigee, networking providers can make their SDN controllers easier to program and manage, and datacenter operators can create analytics-driven network policies and more easily manage heterogeneous SDNs.

"Software-defined networking is creating an important new era of networking innovation that will be defined and driven by APIs," said Chet Kapoor, Apigee CEO. "The ecosystem of apps being built around SDN – everything from simple task automation to advanced control logic and network management – will create more agile, efficient, flexible, and robust networking configurations.”

SDN: Abstracting the Network through APIs

SDN is a shift in network-based computing and communications based on breaking existing physical boundaries on switches, routers and controllers through well-defined APIs, making it possible to dynamically define all aspects of a network through software. The larger the network, the larger the gains in network performance, network resource efficiency, human resource efficiency, and capital expense efficiency.

As a result of breaking the hardware layering of modern networks, new capabilities to make networks perform faster, route data based on business needs, and enable Internet-scale application communication are emerging. These new capabilities are based on the ability to enable new apps to participate in defining the network’s behavior. In this environment, the API management and analytics capabilities in Apigee enable dynamic datacenters that adapt to shifts in demand for specific applications, optimizing network resources, routes, and API services.

Apigee for the Programmable Datacenter

Apigee's API management solution optimized for SDN architectures includes two offerings: embeddable API management software and a stand-alone API platform for multi-vendor SDN network integration and analytics. Apigee's embeddable API management software makes SDN controller software easier to program and manage while gaining control, visibility, and analytics of apps that use their Northbound APIs. The stand-alone API platform integrates network management systems with SDN controllers from multiple vendors, provides network analytics, dynamic policy execution on the controller, and enables network-based programs to use trends to trigger a change in network behavior.

"Apigee is delivering a combination of networking, application, analytics, and enterprise capabilities to elevate a software-defined network into an application-optimized datacenter," continued Kapoor.

Last month, Apigee launched the next generation of its API platform featuring new self-service access. Offered at no cost up to 3.5 million API calls per month, Apigee now delivers a complete, expanded set of services for building, managing, and driving ongoing business value from APIs and the apps built on them.

Apigee's API management solution for SDN is available immediately. For more information, including a new Apigee white paper, "API Management for the Software-Defined Network," go here or email info@apigee.com.
