How Walgreens Uses Microservices

We spoke with Walgreens developer evangelist Drew Schweinfurth about how the drug store chain operator uses microservices.

He pointed to Walgreens' Balance Rewards program, which provides an API that enables third-party apps to connect with the company to share individual health and wellness information that can be eligible to receive reward points.

To simplify app development against this API, Walgreens offers an array of "tiny" services, as Schweinfurth calls them, such as data on a user's blood pressure, or step data.

"One of the things that we've focused on is making our services as light as possible and easy to develop on," he said.
